Anthisan Bite and Sting Cream Information
How does Anthisan Bite and Sting Cream work?
This sting cream contains an active ingredient called mepyramine maleate, which belongs to a group of medicines called antihistamines. It works by blocking the histamine in your body (a natural substance produced during an allergic reaction), alleviating the symptoms caused by the reaction (which most commonly include pain, inflammation and itching).
Alternatives to Anthisan Bite and Sting Cream
Though they are primarily used to relieve the symptoms of hay fever, antihistamines like Piriton Allergy Tablets can help to alleviate the pain, itching and inflammation caused by a bite or a sting. Piriton contains chlorphenamine, which (like mepyramine maleate) blocks the histamine receptors in your body and helps to relieve the symptoms of an allergic reaction.
Read our guide for general information on anti-itch creams.
How do I apply Anthisan Bite and Sting Cream?
Simply apply a small amount of the bite cream directly to each area of skin affected. For the most effective results, you should apply the cream as quickly as possible after you’ve been bitten or stung. Once you’ve applied the cream, wash your hands (unless you’ve been bitten or stung on your hands) and take care to avoid getting the cream in your eyes, nose or mouth.
How often should I use Anthisan Bite and Sting Cream?
For adults, the elderly, and children over two years of age, the cream should be applied 2 to 3 times a day for up to 3 days. If your symptoms have not improved after 3 days (or if you feel worse) you should talk to a doctor or a pharmacist.
When should I not use Anthisan Bite and Sting Cream?
Do not use Anthisan Bite and Sting Cream if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to mepyramine maleate or any of the other ingredients listed.
Do not apply the cream on:
- Eczema
- Cut, grazed or badly-broken skin
- Sunburnt skin
- Large areas of skin
Can I use Anthisan Bite and Sting Cream while pregnant?
If you’re pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant, or are planning to conceive in the near future, consult your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using this product.
Does Anthisan Bite and Sting Cream produce any side effects?
As with all treatments, Anthisan Bite and Sting Cream can cause side effects, though these are extremely rare. These side effects can include an allergic reaction (signs may include a rash, swallowing or breathing difficulties or swelling of the lips, face, throat or tongue), skin redness, swelling or itching in the area where the cream was applied.
If you experience these or any other side effects, stop using the product and speak to a doctor or pharmacist.
