Why Your Tadalafil Dosage Matters & How To Choose
Reviewed on 28 Jan 2023
If you’ve reviewed all the details of what Tadalafil is and how it works, discussed your situation with your doctor, and confirmed that Tadalafil is the right choice for treating your erectile dysfunction, then the next step is to choose the right dosage. Tadalafil is commonly provided in 2.5mg, 5mg, 10mg, and 20mg tablets.
Why is the dosage important? Because getting it wrong may not only result in a worse experience but also put you at greater risk of suffering from side effects (learn more about Tadalafil side effects here). If your dosage is too low, you won’t get the results you’re looking for. If it’s too high, you’ll needlessly stress your body.
In this post, we’re going to cover the standard Tadalafil dosages, explaining the circumstances in which each one is appropriate and giving you the information you need to choose wisely.
Tadalafil 2.5mg and 5mg dosages: consistent effects
Each of these two dosages is used in exactly the same way: to build up a low to moderate level of Tadalafil in the user’s system through daily use. If your erectile dysfunction is consistent and you want to be capable of sexual activity at any time, this approach is often advisable. It is designed to be a more natural way of managing your ED.
Using Tadalafil this way does have a few downsides, though:
- It isn’t ideal for spontaneity initially. If you have sexual activity planned for a particular date, you’ll need to start taking your daily Tadalafil tablets several days in advance so it can accrue in your system.
- It can be expensive. Because you need to take a tablet each day to maintain the level in your system, you won’t be able to stop even if you know you won’t be having sex for a few days. That can make it a costly option when buying privately.
If you’re looking for steady low-level results or your personal tolerance of Tadalafil is low (perhaps you suffer side effects at higher dosages, or you can’t handle the physical stress), then taking a 2.5mg or 5mg tablet every day could be the right tactic for you.
Tadalafil 10mg dosage: use as required
For occasional use, the 10mg Tadalafil tablet is the standard prescription. It’s powerful enough to take meaningful effect within an hour, even if you have no Tadalafil in your system beforehand. This makes it ideal if you don’t know ahead of time when you’ll be having sex, or if you’re looking to have sex once or twice per week and don’t need assistance every day.
And because Tadalafil sticks around in your system for up to 36 hours, you can simply take a 10mg tablet for use one day and then see how you feel the next day. You may have no difficulties and be able to perform as you are, or you may decide that you need more assistance and have the option of taking another tablet (after the initial 36-hour period).

Tadalafil 20mg dosage: the maximum
One 10mg tablet is normally a sufficient amount of Tadalafil to treat erectile dysfunction for up to 36 hours, but for some men, it just isn’t enough. For a number of reasons, an ED sufferer might need a higher strength, and that’s when 20mg Tadalafil tablets can be prescribed.
There’s no practical reason to exceed this dosage. Amounts of Tadalafil in excess of 20mg have not been found to have any further positive effects, but have been seen to produce side effects more frequently (and with greater severity). If a 20mg dosage doesn’t have the required effect, then Tadalafil is simply not a viable treatment option, and others should be investigated.

How context can change your dosage needs
The dosage of Tadalafil you take isn’t the only thing that determines its effects — your system’s ability to digest and process the tablet is also highly consequential. If you’ve eaten a large amount of food, or you’ve consumed a lot of alcohol, then you may find that your system takes longer to digest the Tadalafil tablet than it would otherwise (not always, but it’s possible). This could mean that it takes longer than usual to kick in or is less effective than normal.
When you receive your Tadalafil prescription, you’ll also be provided with advice regarding when and how to take your tablets, so be sure to follow them. That way, you’ll avoid wasting their effects at times when your system isn’t ideally positioned to process them. You can also check through customer reviews of Tadalafil to see how your needs compare to those of others.
Summary
Tadalafil is provided in different dosages, and it’s important that you use the right one. 10mg is the usual starting point, but you may need a smaller or larger amount depending on your goals and your situation — you’ll need some qualified medical advice to help you decide.
